The obverse of the oval medal shows a ragged banner being struck by lightning bolts. Above the banner is the motto “Blank die Wehr /Rein die Ehr" which roughly translates to "Shining arms / untainted honor”. On the left side of the medal are the first and last years of the war "1914 / 1918"; and, at the very bottom, the designer’s name “HOSAEUS". The reverse of the medal features a famous quote by Field Marshal Paul Von Hindenburg of 12 November 1918: "Upright and proudly, we emerge from the struggle in which we have persevered against a world of enemies for four years. Hindenburg”. Above this quote is the dedication “For loyalty in the World War” and below this, the words Der Kyffhauser This piece retains most of its original gilding and features an unusual mounting method. Remains of some of the white padding from a Riker case are still clinging to the pin and catch, but can be easily removed. A very nice example of a very hard won medal!
