This is WITHOUT A DOUBT the finest example of this massive blade I have ever offered!! The 9 1/2" bright blade is marked on the ricasso with COLLINS & CO over the well-known "Arm and Hammer" logo and LEGITIMUS/MADE IN U.S.A./NO.18. The machete style grip is a black hard rubber handle with five heavy rivets and the brass cross-guard is in excellent condition.
The scabbard is a beautifully tooled embossed leather scabbard marked with the Collins & Co "Arm and Hammer" logo, Legitimus, and stamped with the number 13. The scabbard is in absolutely SUPERB condition. The original hanging loop is complete and still supple, quite unusual due to the fact they were known for their lack of durability!
Overall, a premium example in original and unmolested condition! Full sized files available on request. These are getting harder to find with nice original scabbards! Especially, with the scabbard's blade tip being intact. Another fascinating feature of this knife is that on the pommel area of the grip, are white painted numerals: 263. I have been attempting for several months to learn the purpose of these numbers. The most probable explanation, suggested by a very knowledgeable friend, are that the digits may be some type of an accountability number or inventory number for a collection. Another idea could be a factory batch number. In any case I would find it extremely difficult to "upgrade" this example, especially with the unique addition of the numbers. I'm will continue researching in hopes that I do not let a "sleeper" escape my grasp!!
