This early production Luftwaffe officer's sword, made by the famous Solingen firm SMF, has never been cleaned. The sword has the early nickel fittings that still retain nice crisp details on the pommel rims and crossguard. The outside edge of the pommel is stamped with the oak leaf and acorns motif with nice definition and detail. Although there is wear to the silvering between the legs of the brass swastika medallions, the pommel is still impressive and the sun wheels are nicely executed. The lower crossguard sunwheels retain excellent silvering and complement the crisply detailed feather design of the guard.
Mounted with a wooden based segmented grip that is wrapped with a fine grained blue leather and twin strand copper springy wire, this grip shows handling wear and some scrapes and scuffs from being jostled around in transit at some point, perhaps in a footlocker or shipping crate, this wear is also on the scabbard leather. Some high quality shoe cream would do wonders if someone wanted to take the time to do it properly. Most of the rubs and scuffs are shallow and would cover easily for those who prefer restoration as opposed to leaving it in as found condition.
The leather crescent hanger and box clip are intact and in good condition. The nickel plated blade is longer than usual measuring 28 3/4" indicating wear by a taller individual. In near mint condition, this blade is marked with the seated king with sword SMF trademark in a nice deep etch, with an early inspection mark above The blue leather blade washer is present and in near perfect condition.. The scabbard fittings are the nickel type with recessed flat head screws and sport a few door dings, but overall this a complete solid example of an early SMF Luftwaffe Fliegerschwert in out of the woodwork condition.
