The Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen, better known as the Westwall Medal, was instituted by Hitler on August 2, 1939. This medal was instituted to award the more than 600,000 designers, engineers, and builders of the Siegfried Line (Westwall) and other fortifications on Germany’s western border. This medal could also be awarded to all the military personnel who were stationed on these fortifications before May of 1940. This piece is absolutely gorgeous and is complete with original ribbon. The detail is wonderful and the finish on the medal itself is almost perfect. Years of storage in a Riker case without handling is most likely the reason for the state of the finish. It looks like it was fresh out of the packet when it was put in the case! The ribbon ring is unmarked, but there is no doubt it was made by a high quality firm! Shy of having the original packet it would hard to find a nicer example.
